Defragment that drive and get some speed back.

windows-xp-defrag1Regular windows defragmentation is an excellent way to speed up your PC and to make your hard drives last longer. A heavily fragmented computer will make applications launch slowly and even make virus scans take much longer to complete.

Windows XP has a nice visual Disk Defragmenter shown here.

You’ll find it by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.

Windows Vista has hidden the visual part of the defragmenter and automated the defragmentation process. There are a few  nice freeware defragmentation applications that will work in both XP and Vista. One excellent replacement is the free and Open-Source JKDefrag 3.36 that can be found at the following link.

The file JkDefrag-3.36.zip will need to be unzipped which can be accomplished by right clicking the file and choosing “Extract all…”

Once the file is unzipped you can defragment your drive by clicking the JkDefrag.exe file.  The screen below will be displayed when the defragmentation finishes. You can simply close the window and enjoy your newly found speed boost :-)
