Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 7:57AM
First things first...what in the world is Ubuntu and whats with the 8:10?Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
Ubuntu is the most popular flavor (they don't say "version" in Linux, its all about the flavor) of Linux that is currently available for the desktop user and a worthy replacement for either your Windows or Mac.
Ok so what is Linux? Linux is the kernel or base operating system that Ubuntu is built upon.
Ok so whats with the 8:10?
Ubuntu 8:10 is the 2008 version of Ubuntu that was released in October. So the version number comes from the year and month of the release, they release a new free version every 6 months.
So now your thinking ok great I get it...its free...but is it for me....
If you want to use a modern safe secure operating system and don't want to give Microsoft or Apple your hard earned money then Ubuntu is the way to go.
If your not tied down to using a commercial windows or mac application and are willing to learn new ways of doing the same old processes then Ubuntu is the way to go.
If you already use Firefox as your web browser, Thunderbird or webmail as your email client and Open Office as your Office Suite then the transition to Ubuntu will be smooth.
So go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and download the CD image. They even explain how to put the image on a CD at the following link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto. Once you have the CD burned you can try out Ubuntu without even installing it.....what.?..?.yup they even let you test the software on your computer without installing it. Imagine not having to install something before using it...wow these Ubuntu guys are brilliant.
Ok so no excuses.. go to the site, get the software, burn it to a disk and then check out Ubuntu...you might just like it :-)
